Early years of conflict between Bharathiraja and Ilaiyaraaja

Remembering the tough days of Bharathiraja and Ilaiyaraaja’s struggle

In 1968, Ilaiyaraaja, his brother and some friends boarded a bus to Chennai with the intention of pursuing a career in the film industry. Although this journey was not easy in any case, but the story of his enthusiasm and struggle remains a source of inspiration even today.

Ilaiyaraaja told in a conversation with The Hindu in 2018 that at that time he was leaving a small village in Tamil Nadu and entering the big world. He neither had any big capital nor any introduction. I had just one dream – to make my mark in the music and film world.

In those days, the film industry in Chennai was very competitive. Making room for new talents was a very difficult task. Ilaiyaraaja and his companions faced this difficulty with courage and hard work. Many times he had to face starvation, many times he felt disappointed, but he did not give up.

Bhartiraja’s early years were also full of similar challenges. As a director he had to go through many difficult tests to create his own unique identity. Both of them learned during their days of struggle that success does not come from talent alone, but from constant hard work and patience.

The journey of these personalities gave a new direction to Tamil cinema. Ilaiyaraaja’s musical compositions and Bharathiraja’s films are still considered important contributions to Indian cinema. His story is proof that when the passion for dreams is true, paths are created automatically.

These struggle-filled days were important chapters of his life, which will continue to inspire future generations.
