India’s Russian oil imports increased in May, refiners increased purchases

New Delhi: India’s gross crude oil imports have registered an increase of eight percent in the month of May. One of the main reasons behind this is believed to be the twenty-one percent increase in Russian oil imports. This information has been given by the consulting firm Consultants Roundtable on Energy and Automotive (CREA). According to CREA, in the month of May, Indian oil refiner companies have accelerated the purchase of Russian oil, due to which there was an increase in total crude oil imports. This growth is not only to meet the country’s energy demand, but is also a result of changing conditions in the global energy market.

Analysts say India’s trade ties with Russia are becoming stronger, especially as many countries globally have imposed restrictions on oil imports from Russia. Taking advantage of this situation, India has increased the purchase of cheap crude oil. This is not only benefiting Indian refiner companies, but it is also proving to be an important step in terms of energy security.

At present, India is the third largest oil importer in the world and has been continuously improving to meet its energy needs. India’s demand for crude oil has not declined despite its focus on clean energy options over the past few years.

The CREA report also noted that despite the increase in Russian oil imports in May, India has also continued to buy crude from other sources such as Africa, the Middle East and the US, thereby maintaining diversification. This strategy is considered essential for supply security.

According to experts, this diversified import policy of India provides stability in the face of instability and price fluctuations in the global oil market. Additionally, India’s own refined oil production has also increased due to the increase in domestic refining capacity, which balances the overall energy demand.

Finally, the increased imports of Russian oil in the month of May highlights a new aspect of India’s energy strategy, which will help in keeping it competitive in the global market. Continued monitoring of how this trend develops in the future is necessary.
